The Origin of Tea Plant
Yunnan, Guizhou and Sichuan plateaus are the main districts of Chinese wild tea plant, which there are a long history of producing tea. With the history record: from 1122 B.C. to 1116 B.C. King Wu of Zhou led northern small tribes to fight and regarded the tea from Bashu as the tribute, which is the earliest historical records about the tea produced in southwestern district. Thus, 3000 years ago in Shang and Zhou Dynasties tea had evolved from wildness to plant by hand. Meanwhile, the features of tea plant’s great demands about soil can be the evidence of the origin of tea plant, for the mountain soil of Yun-Gui plateau and Neighboring provinces belongs to red acid soil whose nature elements are grail, shale and granite.
Stated thus, the analysis and inference from climatic and ecological conditions, the find of wild tea plant, host rocks and geological change, especially our historical records about tea, which all proves that Chinese is the earliest country of producing tea plant and the cultivated and making technology of tea in other countries is learned form us. Our country is the source area of the tea plant in world, and Yun-Gui plateau is the tea plant center of origin.
2. The King of Tea Plant
Sipsongpanna is not only the original wonderland of floras in our country and Southeast Asia, but also a large natural gene bank. In Sipsongpanna’s tropical rainforest there are still lots of wild types of cultivated plants, including valuable recourses of wild tea plant. The famous king of tea plant grows in the hollow surrounded by mountains whose elevation is 1100m in Nannuoshan, Menghai County.
The height of king of tea plant is 5.5 meter, the width of crown is 10m, the diameter of main trunk is 138cm, the leave is large and the length is 15cm and the width is 6.3cm. With the history records, the age of this tea plant is about 800 years old, which is the ancient tea plant preserved completely in the world, spreading on the ground, luxuriant foliage and just like a enormous cover, which abstracts domestic and international experts’ interests and there is a continuous stream coming to visit and investigate. In Sep. 2016, the author with the staff of National People’s Agricultural Congress conducted a field investigate. At that time, cars can just park on the half-mountain and they must walk for a section of mountain road. Along the way tress were luxuriant and there were murmuring brooks, flourishing bambusa oldhami. Here the Phyllostachys pubescens was enough thick and big. A bamboo shell falling down in the growth was almost 30cm used by local people to package tea, which was not only in the raw but also beautiful. There were also several big old tea plants but protected now not allowing people to approach, which is a necessary measure.
Many domestic and international experts test the chemical compositions of the king of tea plant in Nannuoshan to prove there is a relative high content of simple catechin including L-Epicatechin, (-)-Epigallocatechin gallate etc. There is a great realistic significance of researching the resources and use of Chinese big old wild tea plants. The king of tea plant is really a national treasure.
